Wool

I am Julie and I am the other half of Wood and Wool.

With my love for colour, texture and fabric it is my aim to explore different techniques using these elements. Quilting, one of many age old crafts, I will explore and combine old and new techniques which I hope will be a fascinating mix of inspiration, creativity and with an element of trial and error will create a beautiful and unique piece of home furnishing.

The subject of my work is mainly guided by the the seasonal changes of the surrounding country side. Colour is essential in both textiles and the paintings I am working on along with the style in which I choose for each particular piece. The light and colours of the landscapes which are ever changing in Scotland are a constant source of inspiration for my work.

Wood

My name is Alan and I am one half of Wood and Wool and for myself it all starts with the tree. Whatever species the difference in character in each tree is the real start of the journey and it's always exciting when you finally cut it open to reveal the hidden beauty which you will be the first to see.

My idea of a true wooden item is to try to leave as much of the unique character of each, tree knots, shakes in the wood, even the unusual patterns made by fungi all contribute to the something very special. To compliment the natural beauty of the wood I like to combine other materials such as glass, steel, stone and of course wool into my designs.

Our story

In 2021 we started a complete renovation of the former much loved Toy Shop in Ballater, the entire building having been internally destroyed by Storm Frank five years prior. A major task but we love a project and couldn’t wait to bring life into the famous building in the heart of Royal Deeside.

After many months of hard work we are happy to announce the transformation of this old beloved toy shop into an amazing space to show case our work.

Our products

Dolly mixtures/Sassie Lassies and Laddies

The Dolly Mixtures are individually handcrafted using high quality materials such as silk / mohair, pure wool and natural fibres. Each doll is approximately 46cm long with a variety of hair styles and colour choices available. Unique in design they can be tailored to suit many occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day or simply to say thank you to a special friend.

Furniture

Locally sourced wood, crafted to make unique pieces of furniture. Whatever species the difference in character in each tree is the real start of the journey and it's always exciting when you finally cut it open to reveal the hidden beauty which you will be the first to see. Regardless of how long the tree has been down it takes either years to air dry which never gets it dry enough to use indoors or weeks in our kiln. After that we can start to imagine the many possibilities to make something unique, be it a table, bench, lamp or maybe a mirror, the options are endless.
